SQUARE Stepping Stone by Stalen Design is a corten steel stepping stone for outdoor use, also known as a garden path tile, walkway tile, step tile, path stone, garden stone, and decorative paving. Its sleek square shape adds a tranquil play of lines to a garden path, patio, border, or lawn.

This design element is made of 3 mm Corten steel. Outdoors, the steel develops a natural rust patina: a warm layer of rust that protects the material and creates a robust, natural look. This makes SQUARE weather-resistant and suitable for long-term use in the garden.

The stepping stone is available in 300, 350, and 400 mm. The weight is approximately 2.2 kg for the 300 mm, 2.9 kg for the 350 mm, and 3.8 kg for the 400 mm. Designed and produced in the Netherlands – pure Dutch Design.

About Corten steel

Corten steel is a high-quality metal alloy consisting of iron enriched with copper, phosphorus, silicon, nickel, and chromium. It is known for its distinctive rust-brown color and natural industrial aesthetic.

What makes Corten steel unique is the dense oxide film (rust layer) that forms on the surface. This layer protects the underlying material from oxygen, which significantly slows down the rusting process and allows the metal to last for years — without rusting through.

Important to know

  • Corten steel is supplied as standard in its original, grey metallic state (unrusted).
  • Minor imperfections in the corten steel (such as scratches/steel production codes) will become invisible during the rusting process.
  • Within approximately 1 to 2 months, a rust-coloured patina layer will form — completely natural, without any additional treatment.
  • During the rusting process, the material may stain surfaces or surrounding elements.
  • Corten steel is suitable for outdoor use in all weather conditions and does not require a coating.

Maintenance tips

  • Let the rusting process take its course. Do not use any chemical agents or oils.
  • Prevent moisture stains during storage: unpack the material immediately upon receipt.
  • Avoid standing water on horizontal surfaces to limit staining.
  • Clean only with water and a soft brush if desired — do not use aggressive cleaning agents.
  • When mounting on sensitive surfaces: consider a spacer or edge finish to prevent rust runoff.
